Welcoming Comte Senard to the Vinify Portfolio

One of the most charming and historic domaines in Aloxe-Corton would have to be the abbey of Domaine Comte Senard. Here, the cellar, restaurant and tasting room nestle in a haven of natural beauty near the village of Aloxe-Corton and rolls out towards their famous Clos des Meix Monopole.

Founded in the 18th century, the estate has been passed down through generations of the Senard family, who have dedicated themselves to producing white and red Burgundy typical to the Corton hill. Fortunate in their positioning, Comte Senard have acquired over the years some outstanding plots including Clos de Meix, Clos du Roi and Bressandes, and produced some unique wines including a Clos de Meix Blanc and the only Aloxe-Corton Pinot Gris.

The winery is run by the talented Lorraine Senard who – after working in wineries in the New World and in her home Burgundy – in recent years turned the estate into a champion of micro terroir, producing a style of wine that favours elegance over muscle. Now working together with her brother Mathieu, who assumes commercial duties, they are outspoken advocates of the importance of sustainable agriculture, organic vineyard management and winemaking. Lorraine has also re-introduced native fermentation for all the wines and opts for 100% whole bunch fermentation in most vintages for the reds while favouring gentler maceration.

The main takeaway here is the purity of the wines. Corton is a huge extension, housing all manner of producers mostly making firm, powerful wines, as is the vineyard’s typicity. Comte Senard’s wines do not lack presence, and certainly layer finesse and perfume atop the inherent structure from these terroirs.

It is a pleasure to welcome Comte Senard to the Vinify portfolio, a producer aligned in values, attitude and especially the pursuit of exceptional wines of place.
