Welcoming Macedon Ranges Cool-Climate Wine Trail Blazers - Granite Hills

-Llew King

Gordon and Heather Knight established Granite Hills in 1970. Their Rieslings have amassed hundreds of accolades for their superb quality and their benchmark peppery Shiraz was a precursor of the cool-climate winemaking philosophy in the country. Today, we’re fortunate to work with their son Llew, a cool-climate wine devotee himself, who creates distinctive cool-climate wines that are complex and age amazingly well.

The family-owned vineyard and winery is undoubtedly one of Australia’s highest and most picturesque - perched atop the remarkable boulder-strewn hills of the Great Dividing Range at 550-metres above sea level, it’s prized for producing award winning wines over the course of 50 vintages (and counting), thus making it one of the region’s most acclaimed wineries.

While the 12-hectare site enjoys higher altitude, it’s the broad range of aspects which give Llew an extensive range of varieties to compose with. The wind-shielded north-northwest sites home the Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon, while the southern sites see the Riesling, Grüner Veltliner and Chardonnay flourish. This truly idyllic location provides the best growing conditions, combined with old granitic sandy loam soils with good drainage, for the 50+ year-old vines. Llew nurtures these qualities through hand harvesting and cautious winemaking to fashion a style of wine celebrated for its definitive regionality, varietal expression, fine natural acidity and great cellaring potential.

We are proud to count Granite Hills’ curated collection of estate-grown wines in our portfolio and look forward to sharing them with our customers throughout Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales.
