Il Barroccio Nero d’Avola hails from the sun-soaked vineyards around the hilly provinces of Trapani and Agrigento in Sicily's southwestern region. Here, Nero d’Avola grapes thrive on sloping vineyards, where winds weave through the vines, tempering the high temperatures and lending elegance and balance to the wines.
In these remote, rural corners of Italy, the ‘barroccio’—the traditional wine cart—remains a common feature, linking today’s winemaking to its rich past. Il Barroccio embodies the warmth and vibrancy of Sicily, offering a taste as bold as the history behind it.

2022 Il Barroccio Nero d’Avola DOC

The name ‘Il Barroccio’ refers to a contraption created in Italy in the mid-nineteenth century. Originally used as a way of transporting wine, this chariot-like tool remains a common feature in some remote villages of the Italian countryside.
Winemaking:
Traditional vinification, with maceration on the skins to extract colour, at controlled temperatures, to preserve freshness of aromas.
Soft pressing of the berries follows to extract aromas and colour but avoid bitter phenolic tannins.
Once alcoholic fermentation is over, the wine spontaneously undergoes malolactic fermentation for 20-25 days, which adds complexity to the final wine and mouth feel.
The wine is aged for 6 months before bottling.

This rich, opulent red brims with the bold flavours of ripe dark cherries and juicy plums, layered with warm spices that give it a distinctly Sicilian warmth. Crafted from Nero d’Avola—Sicily’s signature grape, perfectly suited to the island’s hot climate—this wine showcases a deep, intense colour and grippy yet velvety tannins. A true reflection of its sun-soaked origin, it’s a wine that captures both the richness and resilience of Sicily itself.
